Game of Thrones Series Finale, Season 8, Episode 6, Recap

Major Deaths: 1

Director: David Benioff & D.B. Weiss

The episode opens with the iconic intro we’ve all come to know and love. This week’s intro featured a slight tweak to King’s Landing, as the main gate was broken open.

The first scene shows Tyrion walking amongst the ruins of King’s Landing, surveying the damage done by his newly Mad Queen. Jon and Davos are not far behind him. They come across the bodies of the woman and child that Arya was attempting to rescue in “The Bells”.

Tyrion says he is going to speak to Dany, Jon offers to send men with him, but Tyrion insists on going alone.

Jon and Davos come across Grey Worm attempting to execute Lannister soldiers. Jon and Davos insist that the war is over, they’ve won. He refuses to listen, but Jon stops him by grabbing his arm. The Unsullied and the Northmen have a stand off.

Tyrion walks across the map room in the Red Keep as it rains ash.

Tyrion goes into the cellars where his brother and sister died, where he finds Jaime’s golden hand amongst the rubble. He begins removing the stones off of his dead brother and sister and breaks down into tears.

We’re now with Arya for the first time, as she surveys the damage before taking a look at Daenerys’ army, where she sees Jon approaching the queen. A massive Targaryen flag is hanging from a destroyed building.

Grey Worm stares Jon up and down, as the two clearly no longer trust each other. The Dothraki scream as Drogon flies above their heads.

Daenerys walks towards her army and the Dothraki shriek in approval. Daenerys grins as she begins to give a speech in Valyrian. She names Grey a Worm her “Master of War”, the commander of all her armies. She talks of liberating all the Seven Kingdoms, from “Winterfell to Dorne.” It they didn’t know before, Jon and Tyrion now know they’ve messed up … big time.

Tyrion approaches Daenerys and stands by her side. Dany calls him out for freeing Jaime, to which Tyrion replies by saying you slaughtered his city. He then throws off his Hand of the Queen pin and Dany orders that he be taken prisoner. He gives Jon a look to say “it’s on you now.”

Arya silently appears next to Jon. Jon asks what she’s doing here, Arya says she was there to kill Cersei. Jon says Dany is Queen now, to which Arya responds “try telling Sansa.” Arya warns Jon that Dany will always see him as a threat.

Jon goes to visit Tyrion where he’s being held, to which Tyrion responds by asking if Jon brought any wine. Tyrion jokes about Varys being right about Dany and asks Jon about the after life.

Jon half-heartedly tries to rationalize Dany’s actions, to which Tyrion asks if he would have burnt down the city.

Tyrion uses Jon’s Night’s Watch history — “you at the shield that guards the realms of men” — and his sisters lives to spur him on to do the right thing and kill Daenerys.

Jon approaches Daenerys as Drogon appears from underneath the snow. Drogon allows Jon to pass, perhaps foreshadowing how this Daenerys situation will be resolved.

Dany approaches the Iron Throne as ash rains down upon it, mimicking her vision from the House of the Undying. Jon appears behind her on the other side of the room.

Jon has an outburst about the destruction Dany has caused and begs for Tyrion’s life. The two get emotional and begin to kiss before Jon stabs Daenerys in the chest, killing her instantly. She died in her arms and has no last words.

Drogon appears and gets close to Jon and Daenerys as she seemingly sensed her death. Drogon does the sad pet thing as he nudged Dany in an effort to wake her up before letting out a massive shriek. He then unleashes a Dracarys, but at the Throne, not Jon. The Throne melts.

Drogon picks up Daenerys’ body and flys away.

Grey Worm escorts Tyrion to the Dragon Pits to be executed and everyone is there Sansa, Arya, Bran, Samwell, Yara, Gendry, Brienne, Davos, the Knights of the Vale, Edmur Tully, and a Dorneish prince. Everyone knows what Jon did and he is being held prisoner. Yara says Jon should be executed and Arya says if she says that again, she’ll cut her throat.

Tyrion suggest they should pick a new King and let that king decide Jon’s fate. Edmur stands up to sell himself but Sansa promptly shuts him up and tells him to sit down.

Samwell suggests the idea of democracy but the lords prompting laugh at him. Tyrion then suggests that “Bran the Broken” should be king because “he is our memory”. Tyrion then says after Bran, the ruler will be decided by democracy. Bran accepts and Sansa demands that the North remains a sovereign kingdom.

Bran names Tyrion Hand of the King, who then delivers the news to Jon that he’s being sent to the Night’s Watch.

Jon is freed and heads to the docks, where Grey Worm and the Unsullied are sailing of Naath, Missandei’s home.

Jon says goodbye to Sansa, Arya and Bran. Arya and Jon share a tearful goodbye before Jon bends the knee to Bran, who reassures Jon that he was always where he was supposed to be.

Brienne Of Tarth is seen scrolling through the history of the Kingsguars, where she adds to Jaime’s page.

Tyrion is back in the Red Keep in the council room, back where it all started. He organizes the chairs.

The rest of the small council arrives: Samwell, Davos, and Bronn! Samwell reveals that he’s written the book on the history of the era, titling it “A Song of Ice & Fire.” Samwell reveals to Tyrion that he’s not mentioned in the book, stirring a laugh out of Bronn.

Brienne of Tarth and Bran enter the room as Bran asks about Drogon’s whereabouts. It’s revealed that Bronn is now Lord of High Garden and Master of Coin.

The small council discussed the Realm’s affairs as the camera pans out. Jon arrived back at Castle Black, where Tormund is waiting for him.

Arya is suiting up to travel the world as Jon roams Castle Black. Sansa enters the Great Hall of Winterfell as Queen in the North. Jon is reunited with Ghost as Arya sets sail for the edges of the world.

Jon, Tormund & The a Wildlings ride beyond the wall with Ghost. The series closes with Jon riding North as its final image.
