In a pleasant mid-week surprise, Adult Swim has finally announced the official release date (well, month) of their hit adult animated comedy series, Rick and Morty.

Rick and Morty — which first premiered back on December 2, 2013, and quickly developed into a smash pop cultural hit — will return for its fourth season in November.

In a short social media video featuring the two titular characters, Adult Swim comically announced the return of the show in typical Rick and Morty fashion.

Following its initial 2013 premiere, Rick and Morty quickly established itself as one of the smartest, most unique, and generally, hilarious adult comedies to really ever exist.

The success of the first three seasons led Adult Swim to pick up the series for an additional 70 episodes over an unspecified number of seasons back in May 2018.

While Adult Swim has yet to confirm how many episodes season four will consist of, Dan Harmon has suggested in past interviews that he would prefer to do longer seasons that consist of about 14 episodes.

“I mostly blame myself for doing 10 instead of 14. I’m still learning how to do the show efficiently while catering to the perfectionist in all of us. I would like to think I’ve learned enough from my mistakes in season 3 that we could definitely do 14 now,” he said in a September 2017 interview.

Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, the already-iconic Adult Swim series initially began as an animated short parody film of the classic Michael J. Fox-starring time travel movie, Back to the Future.

Following the time-traveling and universe-hopping adventures of Rick and Morty Smith (and the rest of their equally hilarious family), Rick and Morty possess a level of intellect and depth that has been frankly unrivaled by previous outstanding animated comedies.

Once described by critics as “a never-ending fart joke wrapped around a studied look into nihilism”, Rick and Morty delves into heady themes such as what the size of the universe does to the human spirit.
