A Hofstra University fraternity has been suspended after video surfaced showing members from the Long Island school’s frat forcing a dog to drink beer from a keg during an outdoor party. Two Alpha Epsilon Pi members can be seen holding a dog upside down while pouring beer into its mouth “keg stand” style.
“The behavior seen on the video is unacceptable and in violation of the University’s Code of Community Standards,” the spokeswoman, Karla Schuster, said in a statement, via the New York Post.
“The University has been in communication with Alpha Epsilon Pi International headquarters, as well as with chapter members regarding this off-campus incident. In accordance with University policy, the chapter has been placed on interim suspension pending an investigation.”
Students who were sharing the video were condemning members of the fraternity for animal cruelty.
“So apparently it’s okay to force dogs to drink beer even though it can kill them????” Kristina Proscia wrote on Twitter.
She later added in a statement: “As some of you may know, I have posted a video on Twitter that has gone viral. I did not share this to retaliate or to get the people involved in trouble. I did this to show that the Greek Life I know and love is not like this, nor supports it. Being the Director of Harm Reduction and Prevention (Risk Management) of my sorority has taught me a lot and I know I would never support actions like the ones I have shared. I simply shared this to protect the dog and to show I do not support this and this is not an accurate representation of Greek Life.”
The university is attempting to identify the students involved with their own investigation and has stated that any of the individuals involved may be subject to additional punishment.
