While the fourth episode of Game of Thrones’ final season featured a handful of major character deaths and plot developments, most of the conversation following the episode has been focused on the misplaced Starbucks cup that can be seen at the beginning of the episode.
WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR ‘GAME OF THRONES’ SEASON 8, EPISODE 4 WILL FOLLOW.
In an emailed statement to Variety, Hauke Richter — who has worked as an art director on the series since season 4 — said while he has yet to see the most recent episode, he claimed that it’s not “uncommon for such misplaced elements to mistakenly end up in the final cut of TV shows and movies.”
“Things can get forgotten on set,” Richter wrote. He said the coffee cup error has been “so blown out of proportion [because] it has not happened with ‘Thrones’ so far.” [via Variety]
While the rogue Starbucks cup is ultimately a harmless mishap that has happened in Game of Thrones before — an extra in the pilot can be seen in the background walking around in jeans — some fans are pointing to the Starbucks cup as being a microcosm of the attention to detail that the final season seems to be lacking.
As for how various writers, directors, cinematographers, producers, and executives at HBO — one of the biggest TV channels in the world — were unable to catch a glimpse of the now infamous coffee cup during the nearly two-year production period is beyond us, though.
The final season of HBO’s Emmy Award-winning series ‘Game of Thrones’, which first premiered on Sunday, April 17, 2011, will conclude it’s epic eight-season run on Sunday, May 19, 2019.
