Now that the endgame of Game of Thrones is finally here, the show’s writers and creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, have been able to crawl out of the cage that HBO had them locked in to take a victory lap.
WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SEASON 8, EPISODE 3 OF ‘GAME OF THRONES’ — “THE LONG NIGHT” — WILL FOLLOW AFTER THE GIFs.
As Game of Thrones winds down to its final few episodes, series stars and creators alike have begun to make the rounds in magazines and on late-night television to A) drum up further hype (if that’s even possible) and B) to take a much-deserved victory lap.
Bella Ramsey, the actress who played the immediately legendary Lyanna Mormont did an interview with Variety, Kit Harrington was on The Graham Norton Show telling stories about crying to strangers, Emilia Clarke was on Jimmy Kimmel Live! just one day before the Game of Thrones writers appeared, and so on and so forth.
But of all these post-Thrones media spots, it was the appearance of David Benioff and D.B. Weiss on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that proved to be the most insightful.
The two writers — who met while in graduate school in Dublin — discussed how long it took them to read A Song of Ice and Fire, asking George R.R. Martin for his blessing, pitching the show to HBO, the unseen disaster of a first pilot, inventing languages, what they plan to do the night the finale airs, and more.
Following Game of Thrones, Benioff and Weiss will take their talent to a galaxy far, far away as they helm a new series of Star Wars movies.
The eighth and final of HBO’s Emmy Award-winning, record-breaking fantasy drama series Game of Thrones, which first debuted on April 17, 2011, will air its final episode on Sunday, May 19.
