Cheickna Kagnassy: West Virginia Student Threatens Shooting Spree

Cheickna Kagnassy has been identified as the 21-year-old West Virginia University who has been arrested for allegedly threatening to go on a “shooting spree” before killing himself.

According to an official statement from West Virginia University, Kagnassy was arrested by the West Virginia University police department following a tip.

Kagnassy was arrested in his West Virginia University dorm on the night of Wednesday, May 1. Police confirmed that they did not find any weapons in his possession.

Following his arrest, Kagnassy — a pre-business major from Columbia — was taken to the nearby North Central Regional Jail. A judge later set his bail at $75,000.

West Virginia University Police Deputy Chief W.P. Chedester released an official statement regarding Kagnassy’s arrest, saying that their department’s primary concern “is always the safety of the University community.”

“Our number one concern is always the safety of the University community and this provides an example of the system working exactly the way it should. Someone saw something and said something. We investigated and found sufficient reason to take action, all within less than 24 hours,” Police Chief W.P. Chedester said in his official statement.

West Virginia University, with over 29,000 students in attendance per year, is the flagship university in the state of West Virginia. Of the school’s 29,000 students, approximately 22,000 of them are undergraduate students.

The university — which is located in Morgantown, West Virginia — have 15 different colleges and offers 191 different bachelor’s degree programs.

In a statement, the University of West Virginia said that Kagnassy is now permanently banned from campus should be released from prison.
