What Happened to Micalla Rettinger?

According to Iowa authorities, Micalla was hit by a bullet as she was driving on U.S. Highway 218 at around 2:30 a.m. local time on Sunday, April 28.

Police say the bullet came through the driver’s seat window and hit the 25-year-old Rettinger in the neck before passing through her and hitting the passenger in the car, her 32-year-old boyfriend Adam Kimball.

Rettinger was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say they have no reason to believe that Reittnger or Kimball were specifically targeted at this time.

The Waterloo Police Department has since asked anyone who was hunting or possibly shooting in the area of the Cedar River between the Highway 218 Bridge and the Conger Avenue Bridge to call the department 319-291-4340.

Additionally, Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers — who are offering $6,000 for information that leads to an arrest — has asked anyone who believes they may have helpful information regarding Rettinger’s death to call 855-300-8477.

At this time, police have not disclosed any information regarding possible suspects of persons of interest.

Rettinger graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in biology back in 2016.

Speaking to the Des Moines Register, Micalla’s father Stephen called his late daughter a “good-hearted person”.

“(The world) lost a good-hearted person, who was a good citizen, and they probably lost a person who would have become a damn good dentist,” Steven Rettinger said

“She was very committed (to becoming a dentist). At the same time, she found time for her friends and family and making the world a better place,” he concluded.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Micalla Rettinger’s friends, family, and various loved ones during this extremely difficult time.
