Academy Award-winning director John Singleton suffered a stroke on April 17. A few days later, it was reported that the “Boyz ‘N the Hood” director was in a coma. Then, on Monday, April 29, Fox Kansas City film critic Shawn Edwards reported that Singleton passed away early in the morning.

Those reports, however, have since been disputed.

TMZ was first to dispute the claims, saying that Singleton was alive at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, though he remains on life support and is non-responsive. And while the report says Singleton is alive, things are not looking good.

To make things worse, while Singleton is fighting for his life, his family is fighting over his estate.

From TMZ:

The “Boyz n the Hood” director has not responded to treatment and his condition is dire … after what his mother, Shelia Ward, characterized as a major stroke. In the middle of all of this, there’s a family war over control of John’s estate. Shelia has asked a judge to appoint her temporary conservator to handle his business affairs, while one of his daughters, Cleopatra, is trying to block the conservatorship, claiming Shelia is trying to fleece the estate and freeze out his 4 children.

Singleton’s publicist has also spoke out about the reports of his death, saying that they are inaccurate.

“John is still on life support. That reporting is inaccurate,” Singleton’s publicist Shanon Barr said in a brief statement to PEOPLE.

Singleton was nominated for two Oscars for “Boyz ‘N the Hood,” becoming the youngest nominee for Best Director and the first black person to be nominated for the award. Singleton also directed “Poetic Justice,” “Shaft,” “Baby Boy,” “2 Fast 2 Furious” and “Four Brothers.”
