Christina Martinez has been identified as the 33-year-old Colorado mother-of-two who was arrested for allegedly trying to kill her two children on Sunday, March 31.
According to the Otero County Sheriff’s Office, Martinez allegedly stabbed her two young children at their Manzanola, Colorado home before driving off a bridge and into a river with them in the car.
Following an investigation by the Otero County Sheriff’s Office, police found that Martinez stabbed her 8 and 10-year-old daughters before driving off the Arkansas River Bridge on Highway 207 with them in the car on Sunday, March 31.
A civilian witness in the area saw the crash and called emergency responders, who rescued the two young girls. Everyone in the vehicle survived the crash, including the children, who were already suffering from stab wounds.
All three people in the vehicle, who sustained serious injuries, were immediately transported to a nearby hospital.
The Otero County Sheriff’s Office ultimately arrested Martinez on Tuesday, April 16, and charged with four counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of felony child abuse and arson.
After her arrest (which happened immediately following her discharge from the hospital), Martinez was taken to the Otero County Jail, where she was being held at $500,000 bond.
Martinez’s first court appearance in the Otero County District Court is scheduled for Wednesday, April 24, where she will stand for her crimes, including the attempted first-degree murder charges.
At the time of this writing, it is unclear who is in custody of Martinez’s two young daughters.
