You probably shouldn’t mess with Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin. After all, the man barely has any teeth left. But for poor teenager Andrei Svechnikov, the lesson was learned the hard way during the 2019 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Svechnikov and the Carolina Hurricanes were taking on the Capitals and Ovechkin when the 19-year-old decided it would be a good idea to pick a fight.
SPOILER ALERT: It was not.
Ovechkin smashed Svechnikov with a flurry of right hands that sent the Hurricanes winger crashing to the ground. It was immediately clear that Ovechkin delivered a brutal knockout as Svechnikov laid motionless on the ice and analyst Pierre McGuire could immediately be heard calling for trainers.
Check out the wild scene below.
Svechnikov did not return to the game due to an “upper body” injury — aka a concussion.
Unfortunately for the Capitals, Ovechkin’s knockout was the highlight of the night. The Hurricanes would go on to win the game, 5-0, to narrow Washington’s lead in their opening round playoff series. Washington currently holds a 2-1 lead following their loss at PNC arena. Next up for the Capitals and Hurricanes is Game 4 on Thursday, April 18. The puck is set to drop at 7:00 p.m. local time.
The Capitals are the reigning Stanley Cup champions.
