Game of Thrones fans were eagerly anticipating the premiere of season 8, the show’s final season. The show returned on Sunday, April 14, and when it finally began airing on HBO, everyone was treated to a brand new opening sequence.
During the premiere in New York City, it was first revealed that there would be a brand new intro for the first time in the show’s eight seasons, but there was no high-quality footage or leaks.
With the show airing, we now know that the intro stars at the Wall and comes down to King’s Landing. Previously, the intro would start at King’s Landing.
You can check out the new opening below.
Of course, Game of Thrones fans were thrilled with the new intro and had to share their excitement on social media.
“Just by the intro this season, which is completely different than the others… you know that sh*t’s gonna go down,” one Twitter user wrote. Another added: “Like. This intro is not like the others at all. #GameofThrones knows we in the f*cked times now.”

Game of Thrones season 8 premiered on Sunday, April 14, 2019, at 9:00 p.m. ET. You can watch every episode on HBO, HBO Go, and HBO Now. After waiting nearly two years for the final season of the most popular show on television, fans now have a taste of what to expect in the final episodes including the epic, episode-long battle that is expected to be the “longest consecutive action sequence in cinema history,” according to Entertainment Weekly.
And if we are to believe an early review from John Thompson of GQ, the season premiere may be the best the series has ever offered and one of the most humorous Game of Thrones episodes to air.
