Childish Gambino, aka Donald Glover, was on stage to headline the opening weekend of Coachella when he took a moment to honor some of the lives who were lost in recent months. Gambino paused for an emotional speech where he honored his late-father and rappers Mac Miller and Nipsey Hussle.

Gambino lost his father last fall, a few months after Mac Miller passed away from an accidental overdose. Nipsey, meanwhile, was gunned down outside of his clothing store on Sunday, March 31.

In his speech, Glover was brought to tears and wanted to remember the positive spirit and energy that his father, Miller, and Nipsey brought.

“I lost my dad this year, we lost Nipsey, we lost Mac,” Glover said. “What I’m starting to realize, all we really have is memories at the end of the day, that’s all we are. All we are really is data. You pass onto your kids, you can pass it on to your friends, your family. The problem with us, millennials like everybody here we have so much data, like, we know what’s going to happen.

“There’s a hundred thousand of you out here right now. There’s a good chance that some of y’all—at least one of y’all—won’t see next week. So what I’m saying is while you’re here, while we’re here, feel something and pass it on.”

After his speech, Gambino dedicated the following song to “everything we’ve lost and everything we stand to gain in the future.”

The tributes have been pouring in for the late-musicians throughout this year’s festival and you can be sure there will be further tributes when Coachella resumes next weekend.

Weekend 2 of Coachella will take place from Friday, April 19 through Sunday, April 21 with Gambino returning to the stage on April 19. The festival will come to an end with a special Sunday Service performance from Kanye West. The final Sunday will also feature performances from Pusha T, Bad Bunny, Khalid, and Ariana Grande on the main stage.
