Christopher Slutman, a Fire Department of New York firefighter, has been identified as one of the four Americans that were killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan on Monday, April 8.

According to the U.S. and NATO Resolute Support mission, Slutman and three other Americans were killed by a roadside bomb near the Bagram Air Base.

Additionally, three more people were wounded in the bombing. Those wounded in the explosion were evacuated from the scene to receive medical treatment.

The Taliban has since claimed responsibility for the attack at the Bagram Air Base, which is the United States’ main operations center in the country.

Fire Department of New York records indicates that Slutman was awarded the Fire Chiefs Association Memorial Medal for rescuing an unconscious woman from a burning apartment in the Bronx back in 2014.

Slutman, who was a married father-of-three, worked at Ladder 27 in the Claremont section of the Bronx, New York.

A New York Post source described Slutman as a “really great guy.”

“He was really a great guy. He loved being a fireman, and he was a real family man,” the source said.

The death of Slutman and the three other Americans citizens brings this year’s death toll in Afghanistan to seven. In 2018, 13 United States armed forces members were killed while serving in Afghanistan.

At the time of this writing, there are approximately 14,000 United States servicemen and servicewomen currently stationed in Afghanistan.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Slutman’s friends, family, and various loved ones during this extremely difficult time.
