Rondell Henry, a 28-year-old male from Germantown, Maryland, has been identified as the suspect who was arrested by federal authorities for allegedly planning to drive a truck “through a crowd full of people” at the National Harbor in Washington, D.C.
According to reports, Henry — who authorities say was inspired by ISIS — left his Germantown job on Tuesday, March 26 and then allegedly stole a U-Haul van that he intended to use in his terror attack at the National Harbor.
Police say Henry stole a U-Haul truck from Alexandria on Tuesday, March 26 before driving it to National Harbor on Wednesday, March 27. Authorities say Henry said he wanted to use the truck as a weapon against “disbelievers”, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland.
The National Harbor is located along the Potomac River in Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C. — the capital of the United States of America.
Henry was arrested by Prince George’s County Police officers on Thursday, March 28, after he was discovered breaking into a boat near the National Harbor.
Following his arrest, authorities ask that Henry detained until his trial as he should be considered a flight risk and a danger to the community.
If convicted of his charges of interstate transportation of a stolen vehicle, Henry faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
In a statement, United States Attorney Robert K. Hur said: “We continue to gather evidence, as well as review evidence already obtained as part of this ongoing investigation.”
At this time, Henry has yet to be charged with any terror-related crimes.
A detention hearing for Henry in the United States District Court is scheduled for Tuesday, April 9, at 12:45 p.m. EST. Henry is set to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas M. DiGirolamo.
