Reports indicate there has been a shooting at Prescott High School in Arkansas. One person has been injured and one suspect is in custody.
There is a heavy law enforcement presence outside Prescott High School at this time. The suspect and the victim have both been identified as students at the school.
Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton confirmed the shooting, telling KARK4NEWS reporter Price McKeon that an 8th-grade victim is being airlifted to a Little Rock hospital.
Following the reports of a shooting, the school was placed on lockdown. No other injuries were reported in what’s being described as a “premeditated” attack on the unidentified injured student.
At the time of this writing, the specific condition of the victim is unknown and the suspect’s identity has not been disclosed by police.
Parents have begun picking up children from the school after Prescott High School administration dismissed classes for the rest of the day.
The Prescott School District released the following statement to reporters in the aftermath of the incident:
On the morning of April 1, 2019, a Prescott School District student brought a concealed handgun to campus and shot another District student.
The District went into immediate lockdown and the attacker was apprehended by law enforcement. The District’s School Resource Officer was in the building and immediately able to assist. The District is fully cooperating with the ongoing law enforcement investigation.
It appears this was a premeditated attack specifically targeting the injured students, who was airlifted to a medical facility for immediate treatment. The injured student’s medical status will be released if and when approved by the family. Until then, we will continue to keep the student in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Additionally, the Prescott School District said that counselors will be available to talk with students if needed.
