Jorge Rios, 33-years-old, has been arrested for the alleged kidnapping, rape, and murder of 45-year-old New Jersey woman Carolina Cano.
According to New Jersey’s Hudon County Prosecutor’s Office, Rios — a 33-year-old man from Jersey City — allegedly kidnapped, raped, and strangled Cano before dumping her body in a lake at Lincoln Park in Jersey City.
Cano — who lived two blocks away from the park on Gautier Avenue — was found in Lincoln Park lake around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 24. Speaking to NBC New York, Cano’s roommate said she had gone out for a run around 5:30 a.m. and never returned.
“It has affected us so much because it happened so suddenly. It didn’t happen because she was sick, it happened from one moment to the next,” the unidentified roommate said.
Following a medical examination, the New Jersey Regional Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Cano’s death a homicide, saying she had died from “strangulation and water submersion.”
A week later, Rios was taken into police custody on Sunday, March 31 and taken to the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny, New Jersey. He has officially been charged with murder, kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault and is being held without bond.
Speaking to CBS New York, Armando Martinez — a runner who often jogs through Lincoln Park — called the crime “terrible.”
“It’s terrible. I can’t even imagine what her family and friends are going through,” Martinez said.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Cano’s friends, family, and various loved ones during this difficult and troubling time.
