Jahmir “Hero” Scott, a former cheerleader at the University of Kentucky, had died at age 22 after a tragic accident on the New Jersey Turnpike on Tuesday, March 26. After his car broke down, Scott was struck by two tractor-trailers and a car as he attempted to cross the turnpike.

Scott was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

The accident reportedly occurred shortly after midnight.

New Jersey State Police Sgt. Lawrence Peele said that Scott was attempting to cross three lanes of traffic to reach the right shoulder of the highway when he was struck by northbound trucks. He attempted the maneuver after “having some kind of an issue” with his vehicle.

The drivers who were involved in the crash are said to be cooperating with police.

Scott had been on the Kentucky Wildcats cheerleading roster for the past two years. The team took to social media to share their sadness and a heartfelt message about his death.

“It’s with great sadness we announce former University of Kentucky cheerleader, Hero Scott, has passed,” the message read. “We will miss his smile, broadway singing, and determined attitude. Our thoughts & prayers go out to his friends and family in this sad time. Once a wildcat, always a wildcat.”

Scott had previously been a member of the Syracuse cheerleading team before transferring to Kentucky.

Our deepest condolences are with Scott’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult and tragic time.
