Andrew Renner and Owen Renner, a 41-year-old father and 18-year-old son from Wasilla, Alaska, were both charged with unlawfully taking a female bear with cubs, two charges of unlawfully taking cubs, and possessing and transporting illegally taken game. Andrew was also charged with tampering with evidence, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and second-degree falsification, resulting in a five-month jail sentence.
Their charges stem from a disgusting incident that occurred in April 2018.
Thanks to a hidden camera set up by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the U.S. Forest Service as part of a research study, the two were seen illegally shooting a black bear and her two cubs. The bear was hibernating with her cubs when Andrew and Owen snuck up to their den and fired in shots at point blank range.
After killing the mother, the two then shot and killed the shrieking cubs. The two then gloated about their killings for the camera to hear.
“They’ll never be able to link it to us,” Owen can be heard saying on the disturbing video. “You and me don’t f**k around, we pretty much, we go where we want to kill s**t.”
Once the bear was killed, they dragged its body out of the den to butcher it. The bear was butchered off camera, with Andrew and Owen taking its meat and skin away in game bags, according to the Daily Mail. The duo later returned to the scene to pick up their shell casings and the bodies of the cubs.
Along with his jail time, Andrew was ordered to pay a fine of $20,000 and forfeit his 22’ Sea Sport ocean boat and trailer, 2012 GMC Sierra pickup truck, two rifles, two handguns, two iPhones, and two sets of backcountry skis. His hunting license was revoked for 10 years. Owen, meanwhile, must complete community service and a hunter’s safety course. His hunting license was suspended for two years.
