UPDATE: Shortly after Conor McGregor announced his “retirement” from mixed martial arts, reports surfaced that the UFC megastar is being investigated by Irish police in Dublin for an alleged sexual assault. You can read the full details here.

Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor took to social media in the wee hours of the morning on Tuesday, March 26, to announce he has decided to retire from mixed martial arts.

The 30-year-old McGregor’s announcement comes on the heels of an arrest for felony robbery in Miami Beach earlier in March.

“I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as ‘Mixed Martial Art’ today,” McGregor wrote in a post on Twitter. “I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition. I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement. Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas!”

Hey guys quick announcement, I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as “Mixed Martial Art” today.
I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition.
I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement.

McGregor previously teased retirement in an April 2016 tweet which read, “I have decided to retire young. Thanks for the cheese. Catch ya’s later.” Of course, he ultimately returned.

If this is the end of the road for McGregor, however, he would end his professional career with a record of 21-4.

It’s hard to tell just how serious McGregor is with his comments, however, after recently saying that he was in talks to return to the Octagon in July. So continuing with the trend of his career, McGregor is as unpredictable as ever.

McGregor’s last fight came in October 2018 when he suffered a submission loss to UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in Las Vegas. Following that fight, a brawl broke out which led to both McGregor and Nurmagomedov earning suspensions and fines from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Just a year ago, McGregor was arrested on two felony charges in Brooklyn, New York for an incident at the Barclays Center where he through a hand truck through a window of a bus carrying other fighters, including rival Khabib Nurmagomedov. He reached a settlement in that case and was sentenced to three days of anger management courses and five days of community service.
