Dr. Dre sparked some laughter on social media over the weekend when he boasted about his daughter, Truly Young, getting into the University of Southern California “own her own.” The comments came on Instagram with a photo of Truly and her acceptance letter, along with a shot at the college admissions scandal that has involved plenty of high-profile names like Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman.

“My daughter got accepted into USC all on her own,” he captioned the photo. “No jail time!!!”

While it initially received a positive reaction on social media, it did eventually raise a curious footnote in Dre’s history with the university. As it turns out, back in 2013, Dr. Dre and Beats by Dre co-founder Jimmy Iovine donated a whopping $70 million to USC.

The money went towards the opening of the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“The vision and generosity of Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young will profoundly influence the way all of us perceive and experience artistic media,” USC President C.L. Max Nikias said in a statement at the time. “Our goal is to ensure that the academy is the most collaborative educational program in the world.”

Dr. Dre has since deleted his Instagram post.

However, it is also important to note that Dr. Dre gave money to the university the legal way and there is no indication that he falsified his daughter’s resume to land her a spot in the prestigious university. Because of this, we have to believe that Truly Young earned her place at USC on her own merit.

Let this just remind celebrities that everything they say is under a microscope so even a funny, off-hand comment will raise questions for some.
