Guy Gorney, a 64-year-old Illinois man, has been identified as the trophy hunter who was recorded killing a sleeping lion in Zimbabwe.
The video, which was originally shot in 2011, shows Gorney being instructed on how and where to shoot the animal before shooting the lion three times.
Despite the fact that the video was shot 8 years ago, the video went re-viral in March of 2019 and led to further outrage.
In a 2015 interview with CBS Chicago, Gorney claimed to have killed over 70 big game animals. Additionally, Gorney claimed to have killed what he called “the big five”: an elephant, a lion, a leopard, a rhino and a buffalo.
In that same interview, Gorney said that he has a “hard time understanding” the outrage around big game hunting.
“I have a hard time understanding, if you have a picture of somebody with a deer, nobody seems to care. But if it’s an elephant, it’s a big problem. If it’s a lion – especially now – it’s a huge problem,” he said.
After the video of Gorney killing the helpless lion went viral, a petition to prosecute the Manhattan, Illinois man was created and has almost reached its goal of 2,000 signatures at the time of this writing.
“This trophy hunter killed a sleeping lion! This is cruel and inhumane. He is a disgrace to the human race, a coward, and heartless person. No one should take any life human, animal, or any of God’s creatures,” the petition reads.
You can watch the video of Gorney’s horrific act below, but warning, the footage may be disturbing to some viewers.
