A gunman has reportedly opened fire on train passengers in Utrecht, Netherlands. Some reports indicate there were shootings in multiple locations. Police are considering the possibility of a “terrorist motive” in the attack.
One person is reportedly dead and several others are reportedly injured as a result of the shooting.
Dutch Counter-terrorism Head Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg says shots may have been fired at “several locations” & that the suspected gunman is on the run.
At this time, police are currently searching for the shooter. Additionally, authorities have yet to release a description of the suspected gunman. A heavy police presence is on the scene in Utrecht at this time.
Following the shooting, the Dutch government put the Netherlands on their highest terror alert — threat level five — as Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte described the situation as “very worrying.”
Additionally, Prime Minister Rutte said that the Dutch government is holding crisis talks after the shooting.
The Dutch government has increased security at schools, mosques and transportation hubs after the shooting.
