Original article:

Brenton Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian man, has been identified as the gunman responsible for the horrific New Zealand mosque shootings that took place on Friday, March 15. Tarrant live streamed the shooting on social media in its entirety.

The mass shootings took place at two separate mosques and left dozens dead. In addition to the deceased, more than 20 other victims were injured in the attacks.

The two mosques targeted by Tarrant were the Al Noor Mosque and the Masjid Mosque.

Following the massacre, police took a total of four suspects in custody and charged Tarrant with murder.

After the uploading of the video, all of the various social media services such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube have been working to scrub the video from their platforms.

In a statement, New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern called the terrorist attack “an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence.”

The mass shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand is similar to the mass shootings that have become so common in the United States. In 2018 alone, there were 323 mass shootings in the United States, resulting in the deaths of 387 people.

Former United States President Barack Obama released a statement saying that “Michelle and I send our condolences to the people of New Zealand.”

“We grieve with you and the Muslim community. All of us must stand against hatred in all its forms,” Obama’s statement read.

President Trump also released a statement on Twitter, saying that the United States “stands by New Zealand for anything we can do.”

“My warmest sympathy and best wishes goes out to the people of New Zealand after the horrible massacre in the Mosques. 49 innocent people have so senselessly died, with so many more seriously injured. The U.S. stands by New Zealand for anything we can do. God bless all!” Trump’s tweet read.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected by this senseless tragedy.
