Meet Ilhan Omar: The Most Controversial Congresswoman

Ilhan Omar is one of the rising stars of Congress. The 37-year-old is a member of the House of Representatives serving Minnesota’s fifth congressional district. Ilhan is the first naturalized citizen from Africa and the first Somali-American elected to the United States Congress. She is also one of the first Muslim women to be elected.

Omar advocates living wage, affordable housing and healthcare, student loan debt forgiveness, the protection of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, and the abolition of ICE.

One of the things that people used to ask me on the campaign trail when I first ran was “Did you have permission from your husband and father to run for office?” My dad and my husband would always say, “Oh, these people must not really know you.” It’s been interesting to see the ideas that Western societies have about women in the East.
