James Safechuck is one of two men featured in HBO’s Leaving Neverland documentary series that claims to have been sexually molested by international pop star Michael Jackson. Wade Robson is the other man featured in the documentary.
Safechuck, who is featured heavily in Leaving Neverland, said he and his family met Michael Jackson after he filmed a commercial for Pepsi before his ninth birthday.
Leaving Neverland — a two-part, four-hour documentary series directed by Dan Reed — premiered on HBO on Sunday, March 3, after originally screening at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
In addition to interviews with Safechuck, Leaving Neverland features interviews with Safechuck’s and Robson’s mothers, wives, and siblings.
Safechuck went public with his allegations against Jackson in 2014, one year after Robson made similar allegations.
The Jackson Family has since disputed the documentary, calling both Robson and Safechuck “opportunists” and “liars.”
After the release of the documentary at Sundance, The Jackson Family released a full statement about their opinion of the film, saying that the people behind the film were “not interested in the truth”:
“We are furious that the media, who without a shred of proof or single piece of physical evidence, chose to believe the word of two admitted liars over the word of hundreds of families and friends around the world who spent time with Michael, many at Neverland, and experienced his legendary kindness and global generosity,” the Jackson Family’s statement read.
“The creators of this film were not interested in the truth. They never interviewed a single solitary soul who knew Michael except the two perjurers and their families. That is not journalism, and it’s not fair, yet the media are perpetuating these stories,” the statement continued.
Following the premiere on HBO, Leaving Neverland will be available to watch on the channel’s streaming service HBOGo.
