Stanford University announced on Friday, February 22, that Apple CEO Tim Cook will deliver the commencement speech at Stanford University’s graduation ceremony on Sunday, June 16.
Cook, known for being the first Chief Executive of a Fortune 500 company to publicly come out as gay, previously served as Apple’s Chief Operating Officer under its late and legendary founder Steve Jobs.
Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne said Cook was a “natural choice” to give the commencement speech because he has qualities “that reflect the culture of our Stanford community.”
“Tim was a natural choice to challenge and encourage our graduates as they leave our campus and find their own paths in the world,” Tessier-Lavigne said in his statement.
In his own personal statement, Cook called the opportunity to give the commencement speech at Stanford University “an honor.”
“It’s an honor to have been invited by Stanford’s students and faculty, and I look forward to deepening the remarkable relationship that Stanford and Apple have built together over many years,” Cook’s official statement read.
“We share so much more than geography. The passion, interests and creativity our institutions have in common have helped to revolutionize technology and reshape the world, and I can’t wait to join graduates, as well as their family and friends, in celebrating the even brighter possibilities of the future,” Cook continued.
In addition to giving the commencement speech at Stanford, Cook will also be delivering the commencement speech at Tulane University’s graduation on Saturday, May 18.
