As fans of modern sports will know, sometimes your favorite team isn’t on NBC or FOX and extra measures need to be taken in order to tune into the big game.
Whether it be signing up for one of a dozen standalone streaming services or going down to the bar for the game, sports fans have had to adapt in order to consume all of the content they desire.
And one of the biggest tools for acquiring, and thus watching said content, was Reddit Streams.
Whether it be for basketball, golf, the Olympics, NFL, or soccer … if a sport existed, there was likely a Reddit Stream subreddit that provided easy ways for you to watch it. Especially the Soccer Stream Reddit, as it had almost 500,000 followers at the time it got shut down.
However, after years of being a hub for soccer around the world, the Soccer Streams subreddit was finally shut down in early 2019? But why Soccer Streams? And why now?
Why Did r/SoccerStreams Get Shut Down?
Quite obviously, Reddit Soccer Streams was an illegal Subreddit as it breached of Reddit’s user agreement that clarifies that pirated material will be removed and that repeat infringers will be banned.
According to reports, sometime in late January 2019, lawyers for the Premier League sent a copyright infringement warning to the moderators of the popular thread and it was promptly taken down.
One of the moderators of r/SoccerStreams provided further insight into the decision to shut down the thread, saying that it was the “only way to save it.”
“We’ve officially reached critical mass. I regret to inform you all that a few days ago, the Reddit Admins got in touch with us about an impending ban of this subreddit if changes weren’t made. The only way to save it, from our perspective, was to cease all user-related activity here,” the moderator commented.
As for what fans can do without r/SoccerStreams, we can tell you this: if you dig deep enough, you’ll find it. You just have to really dig.
