This may come as a shock to some, but apparently, the new Marvel Cinematic Universe movie starring an Academy Award-winning actor as an iconic and beloved character is pretty damn good. Shocking, right?
While Captain Marvel, the latest movie from the Marvel money-printing factory, is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 8, early reactions have already begun to pour out on the internet, and it should come as a surprise to no one that they’re overwhelmingly positive.
Starring Brie Larson as the titular Captain Marvel, the story follows Carol Danvers as “she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.”
According to the movie’s official synopsis, “set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
And if the early reactions are any indication, this “unseen period” in MCU history is supposedly pretty damn awesome.
Mike Ryan, an entertainment writer for Uproxx, said in a tweet that “CAPTAIN MARVEL isn’t what I expected based on marketing. It’s pretty much an “all in” cosmic space movie. Also, it’s a lot weirder than I expected. Ben Mendelsohn is awesome as Talos.”
Mashable Deputy Entertainment Editor Angie Han kept it simple by merely tweeting that “Thanos is f*cked.”
Perri Nemiroff, who works for Collider, gave a more in-depth description of the flick on Twitter:
“The future of the MCU gets even brighter adding #CaptainMarvel to the mix. Really fell for Brie Larson’s sass, strength & energy in the role. Same with Lashana Lynch too! Ben Mendelsohn is A+ casting as Talos. And yes, Goose is a scene stealer.”
