A student at the University of Washington has died after a tragic accident on campus. On Wednesday, February 6, a 19-year-old reportedly slipped and fell while walking outside of Drumheller Fountain near the Electrical Engineering building.

The incident occurred just one day after the campus was closed the previous 48 hours due to snowy and icy conditions.

The female student’s name has yet to be released.

From the Washington Times:

The sophomore slipped in the area north of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Building and east of Drumheller Fountain around 10:30 a.m., UW Police Maj. Steve Rittereiser said in an email. UW police and Seattle Fire Department responded to the incident. The woman was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where she arrived in critical condition, hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg said.

“My heart goes out to the family of the student who died as the result of a fall on campus. All of us at the University of Washington are grieving this terrible tragedy with them,” University President Ana Marie Cauce said in a statement.

According to authorities on campus, the area where the student slipped and fell had been treated with sand and salt, so it is unclear what led to the fall and tragic incident.
