Frangipane decided community college was the only route for her, but eventually dropped out. This is when she began to look to music for answers. Ashely began posting videos on Youtube and Tumblr of her covering popular songs, such as “I Knew You Were Trouble” by Taylor Swift.

Before her rise to stardom, Ashely struggled with drug use and alcohol. She used these drugs as a tool to help her escape from her own mental struggles. Frangipane was eventually diagnosed with bipolar disorder around the age of seventeen. At this point, she had left home to live with friends.

She was still using music as her own form of therapy and so Halsey her stage name was born. Halsey created her signature moniker by using her real name as an anagram. She also spent a lot of time on Halsey Street in Brooklyn as a teenager, so the name held sentimental value.
