In case you haven’t heard, the end of January has brought about a history cold front to the United States, rendering some areas of the country, such as Chicago, “colder than the North Pole, Antarctica, and Siberia.”
The polar vortex, which began in earnest on Wednesday, January 30, has forced the Governors of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan to declare state of emergencies in their respective states, as temperatures are reported to hit close to -30 in some areas of the midwest.
As a result of the historic cold, some truly stunning photos and videos have been captured in the midwest, particularly in Chicago, where the “feels like” temperature is expected to hit as low as -50.
While hundreds have flocked to social media to do the “boiling water thing”, photos and videos of the ways the weather is impacting various aspects of Chicago — such as train tracks being lit on fire to remain operational — are far more breathtaking.
The Polar Vortex is expected to last until Friday when temperatures will creep back into the tropical temperature of the mid-to-low thirties.

If anyone you know is currently homeless in Chicago, the Pacific Garden Mission homeless shelter — located at 1458 S Canal St in Chicago — has vowed to keep its doors open for 24 hours and will not turn anyone away during this historic cold front.
