Jack Dorsey Life & Career

1976-1999

Born and raised in St. Louis, Dorsey attended the Catholic Bishop DuBourg High School before heading to the University of Missouri–Rolla. Dorsey attended the University of Missouri–Rolla for over two years before transferring to New York University, where he would eventually drop out.

Dorsey reportedly came up for the idea that developed into Twitter while attending NYU.


2000-2005

After dropping out of NYU, Dorsey moved to California in the year 2000, where he started his a company in Oakland, California, to dispatch couriers, taxis, and emergency services from the internet.


2006-2008

In 2006, Dorsey launched Twitter alongside of Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams. During the early years, Dorsey was the company’s CEO, where he oversaw two rounds of venture capitalists funding.

In 2008, Evan Williams took over as Twitter CEO, leading Dorsey to become chairman of the board.


2009-2013

Square is founded by Jack Dorsey On February 1, 2009, Jack Dorsey founded Square, a small business platform to accept debit and credit card payments on a mobile device called Square. Square was launched in May 2010. Dorsey has remained CEO and Chairman of Square to this day.

In March of 2013, Dorsey was interviewed by Lara Logan of 60 Minutes.


2014-Present

In 2015, Dorsey returned as CEO of Twitter on an interim basis before being announced as the permanent CEO on October 5, 2015. Also in 2015, Square became a publicly traded company.

Furthermore, in 2015, In 2015, Dorsey approximately 33% of his Twitter shares to the company’s employees.

In 2018, Square announced that it will acquire website-building service Weebly for approximately $365 million.

Despite his position as CEO in both Twitter and Square, Dorsey does not take a salary from either company.
