Christopher Cleary, a 27-year-old man from Provo, Utah, has been identified as the man who was arrested and charged after he allegedly threatened to kill “as many girls as I see” in a mass shooting.

What Happened?

27-year-old Christopher Cleary was arrested by Utah authorities after he allegedly posted mass shooting threats on Facebook that specifically targeted women.

Cleary, a Denver, Colorado resident, was arrested at a McDonald’s restaurant at 1225 S. University Ave in Provo, Utah, on Saturday, January 19. Cleary had traveled to Provo, where he was staying at a rented Airbnb.

While it was not clear whether Cleary had weapons on him at the time of his arrest, police say they believe he had been plotting to target a women’s march in the town and another in Salt Lake City.

Cleary, wrote the following threatening post on Facebook, which led to his arrest:

“All I wanted was a girlfriend, not 1000 not a bunch of hoes not money none of that. All I wanted was to be loved, yet no one cares about me I’m 27 years old and I’ve never had a girlfriend before and I’m still a virgin, this is why I’m planning on shooting up a public place soon and being the next mass shooter cause I’m ready to die and all the girls the turned me down is going to make it right by killing as many girls as I see. There’s nothing more dangerous than man ready to die”.

Police say that Cleary also posted a comment that said “Theres nothing more dangerous than man ready to die”.

An FBI agent, along with a Utah County Major Crime Task Force detective escorted Cleary out off McDonald’s for questioning. After reading him his Miranda rights, police say Cleary agreed to answer their questions.

“I asked him specifically about the threats he had made on Facebook, and he admitted to making the threats, but claimed to be upset and not thinking clearly when he did so,” the officer said in the probable cause statement.

Cleary was staying at a Provo Air BNB when he made the threats, according to police. Officers looked through Cleary’s phone and did not find any more threats.

Cleary told officers he deleted his threatening Facebook post after receiving threats from people who saw the post. Officers then arrested Cleary for the threat, citing public safety concern issues.

Clearly, who was already on probation for charges of felony stalking and threatening of women, has since been charged with felony threat of terrorism. He was taken to the Utah County Jail.
