Gillibrand was born and raised in Albany, New York, where she graduated from Emma Willard School in Troy, New York in 1984. After her high school graduation, Gillibrand began attending Dartmouth College.
While at Dartmouth, Gillibrand majored in Asian Studies and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She eventually graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1988. After Dartmouth, Gillibrand attended the UCLA School of Law and passed the bar exam to become a licensed attorney in 1991.
