Michelle Wie, born on October 11, 1989, in Honolulu, Hawaii, is an American professional golfer who is best known for becoming the youngest player to qualify for a USGA amateur championship at the age of 10-years-old.
In addition to being the youngest player to qualify for a USGA amateur championship, Wie also became the youngest winner of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links and the youngest to qualify for an LPGA Tour event during the course of her career. She played her first professional event on the LPGA Tour at the 2005 LPGA Samsung World Championship.
Wie, who became a professional golfer on the LPGA Tour before she was 16-years-old, won her first major on the LPGA Tour, winning the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open.
Prior to becoming a professional golfer, Wie was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to South Korean immigrants who moved to the United States in the 1980s. She graduated from Punahou School in Honolulu in 2007 before enrolling in Stanford University. However, because of her status as a professional golfer, Wie was not eligible to play for Stanford’s golf team due to NCAA rules.
Wie eventually graduated from Stanford in June 2012 and committed to professional golf full-time.
In addition to winning the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open, Wie has won four other tournaments during the course of her career: the Lorena Ocho Invitational in 2009, the CN Canadian Women’s Open in 2010, the LPGA Lotte Championship in 2014, and the HSBC Women’s World Championship in 2018.
