Denver, Colorado is one of the most progressive cities in the United States. After Colorado made the decision to legalize recreational marijuana, it looks like they could be adding another natural drug to the mix that will make hippies everywhere happy.

According to reports, Denver could become the first city in the country to decriminalize magic mushrooms after an advocacy group gained enough signatures to add the measure to the ballot.

The advocacy group Decriminalize Denver gained 9,500 signatures.

From the Denver Post:

Supporters of decriminalizing psychedelic mushrooms point to studies of their safety and say they can reduce stress and opioid use, among other arguments. But other bids to decriminalize mushrooms have fallen short. In Oregon, activists plan to seek a 2020 statewide ballot measure that would allow the use of mushrooms for people with medical needs.

“We want people kept out of prison, families kept together,” Decriminalize Denver campaign director Kevin Matthews said, via CNN. “That was the main motivation for this.”

Of course, even if psychedelic mushrooms are decriminalized, it would remain illegal to possess the drug but it would “become lowest law-enforcement priority and [bar] the use of city resources to impose penalties.”

Mushrooms remain a Schedule I drug, putting them on the same level as heroin and LSD on the federal level.
