Golden Globe Awards 2019

NBC

The New Year has just begun, and we have a lot to look forward to in 2019. The Golden Globes will be the first awards show we have to look forward to in January. Last year was a fantastic year for movies, and the nominees were all hits in their respective genres. The nominees for the categories all have their reasons to be there, but ultimately it is up to a panel of 90-some members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Although, the panel makes the final decision that won’t stop others from predicting who will (or should) take home the coveted award. These are our predictions for who will win at the Golden Globes.

Best Picture, Drama

Black Panther
BlacKkKlansman
Bohemian Rhapsody
If Beale Street Could Talk
A Star Is Born

Prediction: A Star Is Born

A Star is Born Lady Gaga Bradley Cooper

Warner Bros. Pictures

It’s no surprise how big a hit A Star Is Born was when it released. This movie was all anyone could talk about in October. The sensational acting from Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga moved audiences everywhere. The remake was superbly done, and the chemistry between the wayward musician and his muse may be enough for this movie to take home the award.

Best Picture, Musical or Comedy

Crazy Rich Asians
The Favourite
Green Book
Mary Poppins Returns
Vice

Prediction: Green Book

Green Book Mahershala Ali Viggo Mortensen

Universal Pictures

Green Book was a huge hit in the fall film circuit. Many people were captured by the genuine friendship between Tony and Don, which was based off a true story. The New York city bouncer and the talented classical pianist was a dynamic duo no one expected. Perhaps my bias is showing here, but Green Book was a great film that captured life in segregated 1960s well. While the film does have some stiff, and incredible competition we’re hopeful it was take home the award for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy.

Best Actress, Drama

Glenn Close, The Wife
Lady Gaga, A Star Is Born
Nicole Kidman, Can You Ever Forgive Me
Rosamund Pike, A Private War

Prediction: Lady Gaga, A Star Is Born

We had seen Lady Gaga act before when she played the role of The Countess in American Horror Story, but she continued to show her talent in her part as Ally Maine. Gaga seemed entirely in her element in her role as she sang, acted, and played her heart out. She was wholly devoted to her character, and it shows in every scene of the movie. We do not doubt that Gaga will take home the award for Best Actress, Drama.

Best Actor, Drama

Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born
Willem Dafoe, At Eternity’s Gate
Lucas Hedges, Boy Erased
Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody
John David Washington, BlackKklansman

Prediction: Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born

Do you see a pattern emerging? Some of my bias may be leaking in, but no one can deny Bradley Cooper’s talent. He nailed his role as Jack Maine, the country singer. Jackson Maine is a tragically flawed character, and Cooper carries nearly every scene he is in. His chemistry with Gaga is undeniable, and he brings to life the struggles that Jack goes through with his music and alcoholism. Cooper did a fantastic job that will surely get recognized.

Best Actress, Musical or Comedy

Emily Blunt, Mary Poppins Returns
Olivia Colman, The Favourite
Elsie Fisher, Eighth Grade
Charlize Theron, Tully
Constance Wu, Crazy Rich Asians

Prediction: Olivia Colman, The Favorite

Olivia Colman The Favourite

I want to say, Emily Blunt. I do, but Olivia Colman gave quite the performance as Queen Anne of Great Britain. Colman was unforgettable in her role as the Queen. She was fun, wild, vibrant, and perhaps even a tad mad. She breathed life into the character and commanded quite the presence. Though Emily Blunt was unforgettable when taking on the iconic role of Mary Poppins, I believe Colman will take home the award.

Best Actor, Musical or Comedy

Christian Bale, Vice
Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mary Poppins Returns
Viggo Mortensen, Green Book
Robert Redford, The Old Man & the Gun
John C. Reilly, Stan & Ollie

Prediction: Christian Bale, Vice

Christian Bale Vice

Christian Bale continues to surprise. While it may seem strange to see him in a comedy, Bale still commands the screen. His role as the former Vice President Dick Cheney carries the movie. Also, he truly throws himself into any role he takes on. His transformation to take on the part of Dick Cheney is startling at best. Honestly, I didn’t recognize him when I first watched the trailer for the movie. Bale is committed and talented it’d be quite the shock if he didn’t win the award.

Best Supporting Actress

Amy Adams, Vice
Claire Foy, First Man
Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk
Emma Stone, The Favourite
Rachel Weisz, The Favourite

Prediction: Regina King

This was difficult. After all Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz gave incredible performances in The Favourite. However, Regina King did so much in just a handful of scenes. King truly captures that role of a desperate mother who wants to ease the burdens of her daughter and imprisoned son-in-law. Her impact is unmistakable. One thing’s for sure; there is certainly no shortage of talented actresses in these movies.

Best Supporting Actor

Mahershala Ali, Green Book
Timothee Chalamet, Beautiful Boy
Adam Driver, BlackKklansman
Richard E. Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Sam Rockwell, Vice

Prediction: Mahershala Ali, Green Book

Mahershala Ali always puts on a moving performance. His subtle and nuanced work shined in the Green Book. Ali brought a dignified and refined air to his role that I can’t imagine any other actor portraying. His chemistry with Viggo Mortensen created a great dynamic in the movie as well. While everyone in this category is tough contenders, I’m hoping Ali will be the one to take the award home.

Best Animated Feature

Incredibles 2
Isle of Dogs
Mirai
Ralph Breaks the Internet
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Prediction: Incredibles 2

Incredibles 2

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Incredibles 2, it has to be. After all, this film was the long-awaited sequel to a beloved Disney and Pixar movie. Director Brad Bird returned and gave us the sequel we’ve been waiting years for. While other animated features were great (no one can deny the incredible and fun animation of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) Incredibles 2 also had a knock out in the box office. I’d be surprised if it didn’t win.

Best Foreign Language Film

Capernaum
Girl
Never Look Away
Roma
Shoplifters

Prediction: Roma

Roma

Netflix

Roma is one of the best-reviewed films of the year. A stunning and moving film it is a loving tribute to Alfonso Cuaron’s Mexican upbringing. The movie was indeed a passion project whose director’s emotions shone through. Audiences and critics alike praised the film to no end. It would be the biggest shock of the night if it didn’t win this award. This also wouldn’t be the first time Cuaron won a Golden Globe. He also won for his 2014 film Gravity.

Best Director

Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born
Alfonso Cuaron, Roma
Peter Farrelly, Green Book
Spike Lee, BlackKklansman
Adam McKay, Vice

Prediction: Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born

Every director in this category has done fantastic work. Also, each movie from these directors is incredible in their own right. However, Bradley Cooper made his debut with the incredible film A Star is Born. The remake was a huge hit, and the score had audiences in tears and awe. I’ll keep it short since I’ve sung this movie’s praises a lot in the article. I have my fingers crossed for Cooper for this category.

Best Screenplay

Roma
The Favourite
If Beale Street Could Talk
Vice
Green Book

Prediction: The Favourite

The Favourite Olivia Colman Emma Stone Rachel Weisz

Fox Searchlight Pictures

The Favourite has received countless praise for its screenplay. With strong female leads and compelling dialogue, the film will be challenging to compete with. Roma does have a high chance as well, but none have been so critically praised as The Favourite.

Best Original Score

A Quiet Place
Isle of Dogs
Black Panther
First Man
Mary Poppins Returns

Prediction: First Man

First Man Ryan Gosling

Universal Pictures

Justin Hurwitz has already proven his talent. He had won a Golden Globe two years prior with the score for the hit movie La La Land. While the score for First Man is different from the upbeat and jaunty tunes of La La Land, he still proves he is capable of composing incredible music. Hurwitz went in an entirely different direction and brought this movie to life. No matter your personal opinions on the film itself, you can deny the music for First Man is captivating.

Best Original Song

“All the Stars,” Black Panther
“Girl in the Movies,” Dumplin’
“Requiem for a Private War,” A Private War
“Revelation,” Boy Erased
“Shallow,” A Star Is Born

Prediction: “Shallow,” A Star Is Born

Let’s not pretend that we haven’t had this ballad on repeat since we first heard it. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper released the song before the movie came out so we could sample the soundtrack beforehand. We all knew Lady Gaga has quite the gift with her voice and in this song her talent shines through. Cooper surprised us all with his incredible singing voice. The duet is beautiful, poignant and the message behind it drives home the point of the movie and what both characters were searching for. This beautiful ballad is more than likely to take home the award for Best Original Song.

The Golden Globes will air on NBC Sunday, January 6, at 8 p.m. ET.
