Back in the summer of 2016, Stranger Things came out of absolutely nowhere to become Netflix’s biggest ever original series, smashing its way into the pop cultural zeitgeist like the Kool-Aid man through an unsuspecting wall.
An homage to the adventure movies of decades past, Stranger Things captured a sense of excitement, nostalgia, mystery, action, and emotion that few Hollywood products possess in today’s modern movie market.
Now, almost three years after its debut, not only is Stranger Things one of Netflix’s biggest shows, but its also one of the biggest franchises in the country — movie, television, or otherwise — this side of Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
And with appreciation comes anticipation, and fans are highly anticipating this third season, which has taken longer to be released than season two did following season one.
Following months of relative radio silence from Netflix and the Stranger Things team, the streaming giant first began rolling out promotional material for the third season at the turn of the new year, including a first-look poster and an announcement video.
However, while most fans were just excited to be getting a first look at their favorite sci-fi show, they passed over a potentially revealing (and extremely troublesome) Easter Egg planted right in the middle of the poster (unfortunately, you need to click the tweet to see the Easter Egg):
That’s right, Demogorgon rats! Not great! And not only that, but the seventh episode of the third season is titled “The Mall Rats”, which is now exceedingly more ominous considering the new context.
Also, gotta love how Will Beyers is the only one (except for Eleven) looking back at the camera while the rest of kids point cluelessly to the sky.
That kid knows when shit is about to hit the fan, and his face says it all.
The highly anticipated third season of Stranger Things will be released on Netflix on July 4, 2019.
