Constance Wu, born on March 22, 1982, in Richmond, Virginia, is an American actress who is currently best known for her starring role in the wildly successful romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians. In addition to being recognized for Crazy Rich Asians, Wu is known for portraying the character Jessica Huang in the ABC comedy Fresh Off the Boat.
Wu, who grew up in Richmond, Virginia, graduated from Douglas S. Freeman High School before attending the State University of New York at Purchase’s Conservatory of Theatre Arts. Wu graduated with a bachelor of fine arts in acting from the State University of New York at Purchase’s Conservatory of Theatre Arts in 2005.
After graduating from college, Wu made her acting debut in the 2006 movie Stephanie Daley.
Following her acting debut, Wu went on to appear in a variety of television and film projects such as The Architect, Year of the Fish, Sound of My Voice, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, One Life to Live, Torchwood, and Watching TV with the Red Chinese.
In 2013, Wu began making appearances in bigger projects, including the television shows Covert Affairs and Franklin & Bash.
Her career really began to take off in 2015 when she was cast as Jessica Huang in the ABC comedy series Fresh Off the Boat. In 2018, Wu finally got her big break when she was cast in the starring role of Rachel Chu in the rom-com drama Crazy Rich Asians, which grossed over $238 million at the box office, making it the highest-grossing romantic comedy movie in over ten years.
Wu’s role in Crazy Rich Asians earned Wu numerous award nominations, such as the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actress in a Comedy and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical.
