Alfonzo Dennard, a former college football star with the Nebraska Cornhuskers and brief member of the New England Patriots, has been charged with two felonies, according to reports. Dennard’s charges come following a weekend arrest which took place on Sunday, December 23.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Dennard was arrested and charged with assaulting an officer and second-degree resisting arrest.

Dennard was initially pulled over for having expired plates.

From the Omaha World Herald:

Officers stopped Dennard for having an expired registration and were going to take him into custody for driving with a suspended license.

Dittman said a struggle ensued when Dennard refused to put his hands behind his back to be handcuffed. An officer received minor injuries, Dittman said.

Dennard was booked into the Lancaster County Jail on suspicion of assault on an officer, resisting arrest and failure to comply. In September, Dennard was arrested for failing to appear in Lancaster County Court on three misdemeanor traffic-related charges: no operator’s license, improper registration and no proof of insurance.

Dennard was also previously arrested for third-degree assault on an officer and resisting arrest in 2012. Those charges resulted in a 60-day jail sentence and 36 months of probation.

The 29-year-old former defensive back faced a judge on Wednesday, December 26 when he was officially slapped with the felony charges.
