Newberry Detention Center
Rebecca Carol Adams, a 41-year-old former detention center officer, was arrested by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) on Wednesday, December 19, for allegedly having sex with a prison inmate back in 2003. At the time of the affair, Adams was 25-years-old.
According to reports, Adams has been charged with first-degree sexual misconduct with an inmate after she allegedly engaged in sexual activities (oral and vaginal intercourse) with Newberry Detention Center inmate Raymond Carwise from March 24, 2003, to July 15, 2003. Additionally, the investigation found that Adams visited Carwise when he was transferred to the Greenwood County detention center in July 2003.
Following her arrest, Adams was booked into the Newberry County Detention Center, which is the facility she worked at when the alleged sexual relationship with Carwise happened.
The investigation, which was requested by Newberry County sheriff’s office, was launched on August 2, 2018. At the time of the alleged sexual encounters, Adams was 25-years-old. If found guilty of the charges, Adams faces up to 10 years in prison.
This is not the first time in recent years that a corrections officer was accused of having sexual relations with an inmate. In 2017, Deenesha Carter was arrested for having sex with a convicted murderer, eventually giving birth to his baby. Also in 2017, Sgt. Heather Sinnet was arrested for having a sexual encounter with an inmate. Sgt. Sinnet also gave birth to the inmate’s child.
