Game Of Thrones has become a cultural phenomenon over these last eight years or so for a handful of reasons. The set design is incredible, the costumes on point, the budget sky high, the writing immaculate … the list goes on and on.
But what really set GoT apart from its predecessors and its contemporaries — especially early on –was its willingness to off main characters, including the heroes.
Whether it was (SPOILER ALERTS) Ned Stark in Season 1 or Robb Stark is Season 3, Game Of Thrones and the creative minds behind it have never been hesitant to kill off a hero or two.
Which makes predicting how the final season will shake out incredibly difficult, as literally no one is safe. But still, that hasn’t stopped almost everyone from trying to call their shot, including actor Richard Madden, who portrayed Robb Stark on the hit HBO show from Season 1 until his devastating death in Season 3.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about his new Netflix show Bodyguard, Madden was inevitably asked about Thrones and who he thinks will be on the Iron Throne when it’s all said and done.
Have you kept up on Game of Thrones since your departure?
Absolutely. I can’t wait for the new season. I kind of don’t recognize that I was in it anymore because I’ve been watching so many years of it, and they talk about Robb Stark and I know who he is but I don’t see myself in that role. I’m just a viewer now, which is so good. That was one of the bad things about being in the show is you got the scripts so you knew what was going to happen next, and I’ve not had that for years, so now I can just truly enjoy it as a viewer, which is thrilling.
Who do you think is going to take the throne?
I kind of think it’s just going to be three dragons flying around and everyone else is dead. It’s a possibility!
Game Of Thrones assuredly epic eighth and final season will premiere in April 2019. The exact release date has yet to be announced at this time.
