The Kappa Sigma fraternity chapter at the University of Iowa has been removed from the university’s campus due to reports of alleged hazing.
According to an announcement from the University of Iowa Division of Student Life released on Wednesday, December 12, the Kappa Sigma chapter at IU “will no longer be a campus organization.” After originally being suspended on November 2, the decision to remove the fraternity entirely was made on December 12.
University of Iowa officials said that the fraternity will have the opportunity to appeal by sending a written notice of appeal to the school’s Dean of Students Office.
As a result of the removal, the University of Iowa Division of Student Life says the fraternity and its active member will no longer be a recognized organization on campus.
The statement reads in part: “The Kappa Sigma International Fraternity voted to revoke the charter of the Beta-Rho Chapter and the UI has removed the chapter’s status as a registered student organization for violating international fraternity and university policies on alcohol and hazing.”
In addition to Kappa Sigma, eleven other fraternities at the University of Iowa have also placed on temporary suspension this semester due to various code of conduct violations, including alcohol and hazing.
The removal of Kappa Sigma at the University of Iowa is the latest major Greek life suspension, expulsion, disaffiliation, or overhaul in the last year, as schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State, and Penn State have all suspended fraternities for various reasons.
Fraternities have been suspended or expelled across the nation as Greek life organizations and universities attempt to grapple with the pitfalls of hazing, alcohol and drug abuse, and sexual assault.
Schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State, and Penn State have all suspended or expelled fraternities for various reasons.
