Federal Bureau of Investigation

Andrea Dorothy Chan Reyes, a 33-year-old woman wanted for an alleged deadly hit-and-run in the United States, has been found living in Adelaide, South Australia.

What Happened?

According to reports, Chan Reyes disappeared from the Los Angeles, California area back in early 2017, just five days after she allegedly ran over and killed 46-year-old father-of-four Agustin Rodirguez Jr.

At the time of the incident, the Whittier Police Department said that on Monday, January 30, Rodriguez was struck by a car while he was trying to cross Calmada Avenue in Whittier, Los Angeles. The driver, later identified as Chan Reyes, hit him head-on near Ditmar Drive.

Witnesses at the scene say while the first car had stopped to allow Rodriguez to cross, Chan Reyes proceeded to go around that car and then hit Rodriguez.

An international investigation that included the FBI eventually led to Chan Reyes’ discovery in Australia and she now faces extradition to the United States to be brought up on charges.

via ABC:

Documents from the United States District Court allege Ms Chan Reyes was travelling at a “high rate of speed” when she hit the 46-year-old man, who was dragged about 270 metres under her sports car. The court documents stated that she did not stop to help the cyclist, as is required by law, and instead continued driving at an “unsafe speed” on the wrong side of the road.

Later that same day, Ms Chan Reyes took her white Lexus, which had a broken windscreen and damage to the front bumper, headlight and front area of the roof, to a repair shop in California where she told staff she had hit a deer.

She flew to Hong Kong — where she had family ties — five days after the fatal hit-and-run in a move the FBI claimed was “with the intent to avoid prosecution”.

If extradited to the United States of America, Chan Reyes faces charges of vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run driving resulting in death or serious injury to another person and destroying or concealing evidence.

Chan Reyes is reportedly a United States citizen who was born in the Philippines.
