David Ian Long, a 28-year-old white man from California, has been identified as the suspect in the Borderline Bar & Grill mass shooting that left 13 people dead. Police believe that Long took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound following the mass shooting.
Long, who was born on March 27, 1990, is believed to have shot and killed himself. Police believe the Glock 21 .45 caliber handgun used in the shooting was legally purchased by Long in 2016.
As a result of the mass shooting, 13 people were killed, including Long. Sergeant Ron Helus, one of the first police officers on the scene, was also killed. A total of 25 other people were injured.
Ian David Long Nationality: American
Long, 28, is an American that served in the United States Marine Corps. Long served in the Marines for four years as a machine gunner before joining the reserves. Police will execute a search warrant of Long’s home on Thursday, November 8. Long reportedly lived at home with his mother.
Early unconfirmed reports on Twitter from people such as Paul Joseph Watson suggested that the shooter was Middle Eastern, however, those reports have since been debunked.
Police say that they were previously aware of Long due to multiple past incidents. Sheriff Geoff Dean said that police were aware of Long due to past mental health issues, traffic infractions, and as a victim in a bar fight.
Last April, Long met with a crisis counselor, who decided that he didn’t need intervention under the 5150 law.
After the shooting, President Trump posted a statement about the slaying on Twitter:
“I have been fully briefed on the terrible shooting in California. Law Enforcement and First Responders, together with the FBI, are on scene. 13 people, at this time, have been reported dead. Likewise, the shooter is dead, along with the first police officer to enter the bar….
….Great bravery shown by police. California Highway Patrol was on scene within 3 minutes, with first officer to enter shot numerous times. That Sheriff’s Sergeant died in the hospital. God bless all of the victims and families of the victims. Thank you to Law Enforcement.”
According to information provided by the Gun Violence Archive, the Borderline Bar & Grill shooting is the 307th mass shooting in 2018.
