David Ian Long, a 28-year-old white man from California, has been identified as the suspect in the Borderline Bar & Grill mass shooting that left 13 people dead.
Long, who was born on March 27, 1990, is believed to have shot and killed himself. Police believe the Glock 21 .45 caliber handgun used in the shooting was legally purchased by Long in 2016.
According to various reports, Long entered the Borderline Bar and Grill around 11:20 p.m. PST on Wednesday, November 7, and deployed a smoke bomb before he began open firing at college-aged students with a legally purchased .45 caliber handgun. Additionally, Long reportedly drove his mother’s car to the Borderline Bar & Grill.
ABC has reported that Long’s neighbors said he was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps who suffered from PTSD and that they “have no idea what he was doing with a gun.” Police — who said they had prior run-ins with Long — will be executing a search warrant of his home on Thursday, November 8.
As a result of the shooting, 13 people have died, including Long. A responding police officer, Sergeant Ron Helus, was also killed. A total of 25 other people were injured, 23 of which self-transported themselves to hospitals. At this time, police are currently attempting to identify the victims and will not be releasing their names at this time.
The Gun Violence Archive states that the Borderline Bar & Grill shooting is the 307th mass shooting in 2018.

At this time, a Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook page operated by the 28-year-old Long have yet to be uncovered. Sheriff Geoff Dean said authorities are currently investigating Long’s social media accounts.
Following the shooting in Thousand Oaks, Donald Trump provided the following statement on Twitter:
“I have been fully briefed on the terrible shooting in California. Law Enforcement and First Responders, together with the FBI, are on scene. 13 people, at this time, have been reported dead. Likewise, the shooter is dead, along with the first police officer to enter the bar….
….Great bravery shown by police. California Highway Patrol was on scene within 3 minutes, with first officer to enter shot numerous times. That Sheriff’s Sergeant died in the hospital. God bless all of the victims and families of the victims. Thank you to Law Enforcement.”
