28-year-old white male Ian Long has been identified as the man responsible for the deadly mass shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California, that left 13 people dead. Long, who was born on March 27, 1990, is believed to have shot himself.

According to reports, Long entered the heavily populated college bar during the late hours of Wednesday, November 7, deployed a smoke bomb, and began open firing with a legally purchased .45 caliber handgun. Long reportedly drove his mother’s car to the bar where the shooting took place.

Police believe the Glock 21 .45 caliber handgun used in the shooting was legally purchased by Long in 2016.

As a result of the shooting, 13 people have died, including Long. A responding police officer, Sergeant Ron Helus, was also killed. A total of 25 other people were injured, 23 of which self-transported themselves to hospitals.

ABC has reported that Long’s neighbors said he was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps who suffered from PTSD and that they “have no idea what he was doing with a gun”.  Police — who said they had prior run-ins with Long — will be executing a search warrant of his home on Thursday, November 8.

Sheriff Geoff Dean says that Long —  who was known for police due to mental health issues, traffic infractions, and as a victim in a bar fight — met with a crisis counselor last April, who decided that he didn’t need intervention under 5150.

Following the slaying, President Donald Trump provided the following statement on Twitter:

“I have been fully briefed on the terrible shooting in California. Law Enforcement and First Responders, together with the FBI, are on scene. 13 people, at this time, have been reported dead. Likewise, the shooter is dead, along with the first police officer to enter the bar….

….Great bravery shown by police. California Highway Patrol was on scene within 3 minutes, with first officer to enter shot numerous times. That Sheriff’s Sergeant died in the hospital. God bless all of the victims and families of the victims. Thank you to Law Enforcement.”

The mass shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in California is the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since 17 students and teachers were gunned down at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, the Borderline Bar & Grill shooting is the 307th mass shooting in 2018.
