Jatwan Craig Cuffie, 16, has been identified as the shooter at Butler High School in Matthews, North Carolina, that killed one person. Cuffie was taken into custody after shooting and the victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Dr. Clayton Wilcox, the shooting happened around 7 a.m. EST in a “crowded hallway” before classes started for the day. Cuffie reportedly shot and killed a fellow teenage student.
The victim’s identity has been identified as 10th-grade student Bobby McKeithen.
Following the shooting, Cuffie was arrested by the Matthews Police Department and taken into custody before being charged with first-degree murder.
At this time, Cuffie’s motive in the shooting is unknown. Similarly, it is not known whether Cuffie was shooting at one person or multiple people.
He has been charged with first-degree murder and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, October 30 at 1:00 p.m.
Following the shooting, classes initially remained in session at Butler High School. However, students were eventually released as “hundreds of frustrated parents stormed the front doors of Butler High School”, reports WCNC.
Butler High School will be closed on Tuesday, October 30, as a result of the shooting.
Immediately after the shooting, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School district released the following statement:
“Butler High School is on lockdown after a student was shot on campus this morning. The single shooter has been apprehended and the weapon is in the possession of law enforcement. Law enforcement has advised that there is no further immediate danger at this time and the initial investigation shows this to be an isolated incident.
The victim has been transported for medical attention. Butler High School families are being advised through phone calls. Law enforcement officers have secured the camps and an investigation by law enforcement continues. No persons will be allowed onto the Butler High School campus until the lockdown has been lifted by law enforcement.”
