Early Life: 1951-1985

Thomas Mark Harmon born on Septemeber 2nd, 1951 in Burbank, California. His father Thomas Harmon worked as a sports broadcaster, which meant that Mark was left with his mother former actress Elyse Knox frequently. Mark had to be the man of his house while his father was away and help his mother care for the two younger children. The time Mark’s father spent away from his family, drastically altered his relationship with Mark. The one thing the father and son did have in common was their love of sports. Both Mark and his father had success footballs careers in high school and college.

After serving as quarterback for the University of California for over two seasons, Mark decided not to pursue his career in football any further. Harmon’s first acting role was on Ozzie’s Girls, due to the fact that his sister Kristen began dating Ricky Nelson, the son of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson. This gave Harmon a taste for the entertainment industry. Mark graduated with a degree in communications in 1974. Harmon, after trying a hand full of jobs wanted to try his hand at acting.

After a successful string of guest appearances, Harmon received his notable acting role. In 1977 Harmon was cast in the movie Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years. Mark played the role so well he was even nominated for an Emmy. After the film Harmon went through a dry spell, still having not found his nitch in the industry. He took theater roles to support himself until he landed his big role in the prime-time soap opera Flamingo Road. Following the end of that show, Harmon was cast in the hit medical drama St. Elsewhere. He joined a star-studded cast as he played Dr. Bobby Caldwell alongside Denzel Washington, David Morse. Ed Begley Jr., William Daniels, and Howie Mandel. Harmon’s role was critical in promoting awareness about AIDS, after having his character contract the disease the third season of the show.

St ElseWhere to NCIS: 1986-Present

In 1986, Harmon took on his most insane role yet, playing Ted Bundy the notorious serial killer in the TV movie The Deliberate Stranger. But this dark and gruesome role did not affect the way people viewed Harmon. Mark was named People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 1986. After guest starring and having small roles in countless other shows, Harmon took on Chicago Hope another medical drama in 1996. He played the role of an orthopedic surgeon. After the end of the show in 2000, Harmon played small roles in some made for TV movies. His next big break would be the hit show NCIS.

The producer of NCIS Don Bellisario was a fan of Harmon’s work from the beginning. But after seeing Harmon on The West Wing, he knew mark would be the perfect fit for his latest project. Harmon was cast as the lead investigator Leroy Jethro Gibbs, in the military crime procedural drama NCIS. Mark had the perfect personality to play this rough around the edges character. This character had won Harmon critical acclaim and will continue to do so for years to come. I can’t wait to see what role this amazingly talented man takes on next.
