57-year-old James William Daniels has been identified as the person who allegedly abducted a University of Georgia woman on the streets of Athens, Georgia on the morning of Wednesday, October 24.
According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, Daniels allegedly coaxed a UGA student into his car on Broad Street around 12:15 a.m. The student was later found safe after police released surveillance images and asked for help identifying and locating her.
Daniels was immediately arrested and was charged with false imprisonment and rape.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Mike Ayers said that Daniels has an extensive criminal history”, including charges child pornography and violent sexual assault.
On Thursday, October 25, University of Georgia officials confirmed that the abducted woman is a University of Georgia student.
Police say that they Daniels could possibly be linked to other attempted abductions in the area and have asked anyone who may have come in contact with him or his black Nissan Sentra to reach out to Detective Michael Poole at Michael.Poole@accgov.com or 706-613-3330.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department released the following statement on Facebook after Daniels’ arrest:
“This morning we asked for the public’s assistance in locating a college-age female. She has been identified and is assisting with our investigation. A suspect is in custody and charges are pending. Due to the continuing investigation, we are not releasing his identity at this time but ask that anyone who has had an interaction with the driver of a black Nissan Sentra in the Athens area to please contact the ACCPD. Thank you. “
At this time, the University of Georgia student’s identity has not been provided.
